Care for children in need through school or after-school programs! In this Service & Leadership program offered by CIEE, students will work with one of CIEE’s partner NGOs providing educational enrichment to at-risk children and youth age 4 to 15. As a teacher’s helper, you’ll wear many hats!
Live in a land of more than 80 languages and 70 tribal groups! In Ghana you can converse with nearly everyone around you, as English is the official language. Living in a dorm at the University of Ghana, you’ll have an intercultural experience like no other. Hang out with your CIEE peers, go out to watch Ghanaian movies, and meet other international students on campus.
Each day you’ll work with an NGO dedicated to helping disadvantaged children. CIEE partners with the Future Leaders Underprivileged Children’s Center (UCC), which prepares out-of-school children to join the formal educational system. CIEE also partners with Christah International School and Shalom Home, where students help teach lessons. You’ll bridge cultures and build relationships with at-risk children and youth, ages 4 to 15. Through teaching one-on-one or group lessons, sometimes coaching sports or supervising activities, you’ll enrich children’s lives as well as your own. You’ll provide lessons as well as care and affection to children who lack traditional family and community support. Teaching these children is a rewarding and challenging opportunity to experience cross-cultural work in a safe and comfortable environment.
When not volunteering you will take the Twi language class to help you in your daily conversations and interactions with Ghanaian people. You could also sit in the Intercultural Communication and Leadership class.
