Trace the history of this magnificent city through the lens of its art – from its Moorish origins to its ultra-modern present.
Madrid is a heavyweight among “art capitals.” Three of the world’s most important art collections are located in one block alone – the Paseo del Arte – making it easy to view works by Velázquez and El Greco, Picasso, Dali and Roy Liechtenstein all in one afternoon. That still leaves time for dabbling in projects of your own, from outdoor photography to studio art. As an “artist-in-residence” in this experiential program, you’ll learn about Madrid by exploring the Spanish greats and ornate buildings of world renown. But you’ll also find a blooming contemporary art scene of photography, graffiti, architecture and studio art. It’s hard to imagine a more lively place to study art, history and the connection between the two. Morning classes prep you for exciting afternoon tours and excursions to working studios. You’ll meet local artists and photographers, create art projects with local Spanish-speaking peers, and take a survival Spanish course to help you navigate the city. Evenings find you back home with your friendly host family, practicing Spanish as you prepare and share meals, and hang out with your host "siblings.” As a final project presentation, you’ll focus on a Spanish painter, architect, studio artist or photographer, or create a short documentary video about the significance of Madrid as an art destination. You’ll return home with a certificate in Art & History, an amazing portfolio, and inspiration to make your mark in the year ahead.
