Guide teen girls as they find their voices and chart their futures – and find your own path to enlightenment along the way.
Morning yoga and intercultural classes inspire you for your daily mission: teaching, learning, and making a tangible difference in the lives of marginalized teen girls eager to break through the constraints of traditional social norms. Here you’ll work with an innovative NGO called VOICE 4 Girls, which teaches life skills and spoken English through activity-based camps covering topics such as hygiene, puberty, sexual health and well-being. This program has been recognized as an effective way to build confidence and communication skills – as well as a powerful preventative measure to stop cycles of poverty and inequality. Their goal? To educate one million girls by 2020. In Hyderabad, you’ll see all sides of Indian life – from poverty to luxury, from traditional to ultramodern. During classes at the university, working onsite with the NGO, and back home in your hotel, you’ll bond with your all-female CIEE cohorts and reflect on your daily insights. Cultural activities and excursions will take you to amazing palaces, mosques and temples, and on a mesmerizing overnight train ride to Hampi – a UNESCO World Heritage site in Karnataka. What else will you do? Dabble in henna design and Bollywood dance. Take Indian cooking classes in the Biryani capital of the world. Learn yoga at a whole new level – through morning instruction plus a day-long workshop. Savor some osmania biscuits with a cup of Irani chai, a classic Hyderabad tradition introduced by the Persians long ago. For one week during the program, you’ll stay in a dorm on a boarding school campus in a rural village. Partnering with schools in regions where the female rural literacy is below the national average, VOICE 4 Girls is able to reach girls who need their services most. Be a part of this growing movement and see how far it goes. Return home with 50+ hours of International Service Learning, a rare perspective and the intercultural experience of a lifetime.
