Summer@Brown Courses for English Language Learners (ELL) are two-week courses, offered in a broad range of academic disciplines, reflecting the breadth and depth of Brown’s undergraduate curriculum.
The mission of Summer@Brown Courses for English Language Learners is to offer college-bound students for whom English is not their primary language, an opportunity to experience Brown’s rigorous curriculum while strengthening their English language proficiency. By offering students an opportunity to study English within the context of an academic discipline, students are able to broaden their understanding of a specific discipline while gaining a stronger and more nuanced command of the English language. Summer@Brown Courses for English Language Learners are, like all Summer@Brown courses, designed to reflect the challenges of first year college level courses, and so provide solid preparation for further study in each discipline.
In addition to morning sessions, there are three afternoon meeting times per week to provide students with additional support in the following language areas; listening, public speaking, reading and academic writing. Students can expect to be challenged both in terms of their English language learning and critical thinking skills.
Students are asked to be ready to critically engage with course content in English. Students who enroll in these courses need a high degree of proficiency in English, with fluidity in the following areas; speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Such a degree of proficiency will enable students to fully and independently engage in both the academic and co-curricular activities. Students should have at least three full years of English language instruction.
