General Itinerary:
Day 1 ~ Participants will meet each other and the AMC instructors on the first morning at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. We will spend the morning getting to know each other, covering logistics and expectations, and thoroughly checking our personal gear. After lunch, we will set out for a short introductory afternoon hike before driving up the road to Barnes Field Campground where we'll learn how to set up camp and cook on a camp stove.
Day 2 ~ We will pack up lunch and our extra layers then head out for a full day hike on one of Pinkham Notch's many trails. Possible destinations include Tuckerman's Ravine, Glen Boulder, and Lowe's Bald Spot. The group will help decide which of the options is the right one for them. We'll return to our campsite in the evening for dinner, games, and relaxing.
Day 3 ~ We'll explore a nearby river by canoe, learning paddle strokes, canoe safety, and open water rescue skills. AMC provides all canoeing equipment.
Day 4 - 6 ~ In the morning, after breakfast at camp, we'll meet one or more guides from the Eastern Mountain Sports Climbing School (EMS) for 3 days of rock climbing. Some of the climbing sites we use regularly include Cathedral Ledge and White Horse Ledge in North Conway and Square Ledge in Pinkham Notch. We'll learn about climbing ropes, harnesses, climbing knots, how to belay, rock climbing techniques, and rock site safety practices. On the final climbing day, the group may have the opportunity to try a multi-pitch climb. EMS provides all rock climbing equipment.
Day 7 ~ After breakfast on day six, we'll pack up our campsite and head out for one last hike in Pinkham Notch before returning to Pinkham Notch Visitor Center to wrap up the trip and say our goodbyes!
