AMC's Teen Wilderness Adventures: 5-Day White Water Kayaking Adventure (Ages 13-15)
Overview
We offer exciting, rewarding outdoor adventure education for youth ages 12-18 ranging in length from 5-20 days. Teen Wilderness Adventures combine one or more outdoor activities--like hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, --with spectacular destinations.
Cool off from the summer heat on this fun white water adventure in the mountains of New Hampshire and western Maine. Plunge through the rapids of the Androscoggin while you learn and develop paddle strokes, read the river, roll, and make maneuvers through swiftly moving water.
Spend the first day of the trip getting to know your crew and making new friends, then spend the following four days developing personal skills on the water, returning to your riverside basecamp in the evenings. During the first paddle day you will start on flat water to learn or refresh the foundational skills and gradually move on to Class I, II and possibly III whitewater.
General Itinerary:
Day 1: After an introductory meeting with instructors, group and parents, gear is checked and issued. After lunch the group will be picked up and transported to Great Glen trails where they will get outfitted with boats and paddling equipment. They will spend their first afternoon on flat water, learning paddle strokes and how to maneuver their kayaks
Day 2-4: Participants will have opportunities each day to challenge themselves further in rapids of increasing difficulty and excitement and on different rivers around the area. They may learn and practice skills such as eddy catching, peel-outs, combat roll, ferrying, scouting and how to read whitewater rapids to pick the best route.
Day 5: The group will be transported back to Pinkham Notch. They will have lunch, de-issue borrowed equipment and debrief their trip before being picked up in the afternoon.
