Overview

We offer exciting, rewarding outdoor adventure education for youth ages 12-18 ranging in length from 5-20 days. Teen Wilderness Adventures combine one or more outdoor activities--like hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, --with spectacular destinations.

Have you wanted to learn basic outdoor skills, but getting up to the White Mountains is too far, or maybe you just want to explore a new area? With historic back country shelters, and distant views of the New York City lights, Harriman State Park and our Corman Harriman Outdoor center provide a great venue to learn the art of backpacking and back country camping, all within a stone's throw from New York City and New Jersey. Spend this 5 day trip exploring the area by canoe, hiking, and backpacking and bonding with new friends, and checking out the views along the way. Learn the skills to stay safe and comfortable in the back country and gain a connection to the outdoors exploring this exciting and accessible course area. General Itinerary: Day 1: After an introductory meeting with instructors, group and parents at Harriman Outdoor Center, gear is checked and issued. After Lunch the group will set out on a day hike around Harriman Outdoor Center's breakneck pond before returning to set up their campsite on the tent platforms and three sided shelters located at the outdoor center. They will learn to cook on camp stoves, and set up tents, with the comfort of nearby restroom facilities and the beautiful lakeside only feet away. Day 2: The group will set out on Breakneck pond in Canoes for the day. They will learn basic paddle strokes, canoe rescue skills, teamwork and communication with their boat partner. Day 3-4: The group sets out for two nights of backpacking along the ridges and lakes of Harriman State Park. The group works together to break down camp, goes over their route for the day, and hit the trail for a backcountry campsite stopping for lunch and breaks along the trail. The group continues refining their outdoor skills, and developing friendships and enjoying the scenic views along the way. After arriving in camp, the group may play a game, or participate in team initiatives, or have some down time to reflect on their experience in the outdoors. Each night the group will set up tents, or possibly have the chance to sleep in stone back country shelters or lean-tos Day 5: The group hikes to the trailhead where they are picked up and transported back to Harriman Outdoor Center. They will have lunch, de-issue borrowed equipment and debrief their trip before being picked up in the afternoon.
