Have you ever wanted to be a journalist? Write a story about your life experience? Share an opinion with your community? Or maybe share your love of sports, or science, or history, or the arts with the world? If so, Write the World's Nonfiction Summer Writing Camp is for you!
Together, we will consider the diversity of the genre while exploring techniques that connect readers and writers—research, reflection, scene-building, dialogue, narration. This workshop will offer writers a chance to consider these and other tools while trying their hand at numerous forms of creative nonfiction, studying published essays and articles from well-regarded publications and considering how our lived experiences and observations of the world(s) around us can inform captivating, compelling prose.
Participants will leave camp with a deepened understanding of the breadth of the nonfiction world, as well as with a finalized personal essay, opinion article, or reported article (check out our Writing for Publication camp to learn how to take these finished drafts out into the world).
Curriculum Summary: Participants of all skill levels will walk away with 10+ draft writings incorporating craft techniques in the personal narrative, op-ed, and journalistic genres, as well as one finalized nonfiction piece of their choosing. Writers will receive and provide written and verbal peer review from/for fellow campers and will benefit from individualized feedback from their instructors.
During workshop sessions, you’ll engage in interactive writing activities, connect with peers around the world, and work together to grow your writing skills. Between workshop sessions, you may be asked to work independently (and asynchronously) on writing prompts and activities, guided by peer and expert reviews, at your own pace, for approximately 1-2 hours, depending on your facilitator’s workshop plan. You will also receive individualized feedback that will strengthen your writing.
