Question Everything is a mind-expanding residential summer program for high school students, offered by the UMass Philosophy Department June 26–July 9, 2022. We’ll explore exciting philosophical issues in a fun and supportive environment. It’s a chance for participants to get a taste of college, meet new people, and most importantly, question everything!

In 2022, Question Everything's theme is “Identity and Diversity.” Participants will explore questions such as:

    • What are race and gender, and how important are they for your identity?
    • If you lost all your memories, would you still be the same person?
    • What makes you who you are: your upbringing? Your genes? Your choices?
    • If all parts of a bike get replaced, is it still the same bike?
    • To what extent does your identity depend on how society sees you?

The program will feature a variety of activities. On most days, there will be an interactive guest lecture by a college professor about an interesting issue related to our theme. The remainder of the time, the lead instructors will engage you in discussions, debates, role-play activities, and games, all connected to identity and diversity. You will also have time to do your own research about an issue that you find particularly intriguing and present your findings to the others.

All admitted applicants automatically receive a full scholarship covering room and board, instruction, and materials. Because the program is fully funded, we will give preference to students from lower-income families. We will also give preference to students from Springfield and Holyoke, MA.

Please note for this program only, applications are done at this link, not through the general Summer Pre-College application. The deadline to apply is April 10, 2022. Accepted students will be notified shortly after this date.
