    ___________________________

Pandemics and Society is a two-week program for high school students which explores the impact of COVID-19 in terms of race, class, and gender. Grounded in the Social Thought and Political Economy department's program of intersectionality and study of social movements, students will have the opportunity to read college level readings addressing the complex relationship of oppression and resistance. This course will have a global viewpoint exploring COVID-19’s impact on China, Italy, and South Africa. In particular, readings will focus on how social movements have contested the growing inequality due to the pandemic.

Class sessions will be discussion based, focused on student presentations, and short lectures. Short readings will be assigned for every class anchoring the class in research-based evidence and social sciences. This course will have a final project where students will create a power point presentation based on the readings assigned in class. By the end of the course, students will understand the relationship of capitalism to the pandemic and how social movements have responded.

Schedule: Live synchronous sessions Monday - Thursday 12 - 2pm (EST)

Online courses will be delivered through live meetings and will include offline assignment and projects. Courses meet synchronously 3 - 5 times per week primarily using Zoom, but may use other communication tools. Courses will be managed through UMass Amherst's Moodle or Blackboard platforms.
