    Learn journalistic techniques and stylistic tricks to communicate political analysis concisely and persuasively while developing your own unique voice in the epicenter of political discourse.

    Students will develop and enhance their journalism and commentary skills, learn best practices for a changing professional environment and use Washington DC as the context for reporting and writing on a range of political issues, from the personal to societal.

    Using the lens of politics, students will work on developing strong journalism and critical thinking skills through instruction and practice in interviewing, researching, fact-checking and pitching to editors. Students will learn how to develop their voice and perspective in relation to political issues, ranging from the personal to societal. Students will also analyze the current landscape of political commentary, including looking at ethical concerns, evolving challenges and the potential future of political commentary itself.

    This course is taught by a wide variety of Faculty who will imbue the general syllabus with a focus on their own areas of journalistic and topical expertise.

    Course Highlights

    Summer Academy enables students to dive deep into a course of study, sharpening skills for their academic and professional futures. Each course is carefully designed to suit student interests and encourage intellectual curiosity.

    • Students will develop writing, research and reporting skills in relation to their particular uses in political commentary.

    • Students will learn the critical differences between news and opinion writing, crafting their own ideas and then pitching them.

    • Students will meet experts in the field, learning about career paths, best practices, controversies and the changing nature of political commentary.

    • Possible virtual site visits include: The Library of Congress, leading university journalism programs, The Smithsonian Institution and The White House.

    • Previous guest speakers include: Mikayla Bouchard (Editor, The New York Times), Binyamin Appelbaum (Editorial Writer & Author, The New York Times), Ari Isaacman-Bevacqua (Communications, The New York Times), Brianne Gorod (Chief Counsel at the Constitutional Accountability Center and former clerk to Justice Stephen Breyer on the U.S. Supreme Court) and William Bibbiani, Film Critic).
