    Dive into what lies at the core of New York — the city’s vital immigrant population — and learn how the complex, ever-changing roles of law, journalism and culture impact the current debate.

    “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” The Statue of Liberty has proudly stood in New York Harbor honoring the waves of immigrants that came before her and welcoming those who have passed by her “lifted lamp beside the golden door.” Regardless of the actual welcome that these groups have received upon their arrival, is it any wonder that New York City has come to be known – among other things – for its vibrant and varied immigrant communities and cultures? In this course students will explore immigration in the City – and, by extension, the country – through the lenses of journalism, culture, and the law.

    This multidisciplinary approach to learning encourages students to sample different fields and employ critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. The program is geared toward students eager to discover their passions, try something new and prepare for college and life after high school. From virtual site visits to lectures by expert practitioners, this course is curated to give students a newfound sense of direction for their future studies by shedding light on a diverse selection of subject material.

    Course Highlights

    Summer Academy enables students to dive deep into a course of study, sharpening skills for their academic and professional futures. Each course is carefully designed to suit student interests and encourage intellectual curiosity.

    • The law is the foundation on which America is built. In our current political climate, how do we navigate this foundation while at the same time continue being a nation of immigrants? In this module, students will go behind the edifice of the courtroom to explore how law functions in the real world. Focusing on New York City, students will investigate how current laws and the changing political landscape affect the city’s population, participating in critical debates around these themes.

    • Students will dive into immigration and the law through the lens of journalism, examining how it is reported on and navigate the challenges that covering vibrant immigrant communities incur. In the journalism module, students will learn and use basic journalism practices to understand both the immigration system and the role of law in the immigration debate today.

    • With nearly 3.3 million people from over 150 countries residing in New York City, there are cultural organizations, food, art and experiences galore. Students will explore how immigrant life and culture shapes and contributes to the fabric of the city, what immigrant-led movements are burgeoning in response to the nation’s current events and what types of diverse cultural experiences occur in neighborhoods throughout the city.

    • Possible site visits include: El Museo del Barrio, Museum of Chinese in America, EPIC: The Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin and New York immigrant communities.

    • Previous guest speakers include: Sania Khan (New York Assistant Attorney General), Mauricio Noroña (Interim Supervising Attorney, African Services Committee), Shahid Khan (Local Activist & Community Organizer) and Lam Vo (Journalist).

    $5,325* for Day students; $5,925* for Residential students. Tuition is based on 2-week course.
