The Stem Cell Research Internship Program at Pathways to Stem Cell Science provides this and more!
The Stem Cell Research Internship is a rigorous, PhD-style training program for high school students who are serious about pursuing a career in science or medicine. This life-changing opportunity enables aspiring scientists to kick-start their careers in laboratories that are transforming the future of medicine.
The program takes place over eight-weeks, beginning with a 5-day industry-style training course called the "Stem Cell Boot Camp", designed specifically to prepare high school students for working in a professional research laboratory. Unique to our program, the Stem Cell Boot Camp provides introductory training in a variety of widely used bioscience techniques, including mammalian stem cell culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry and microscopy.
After completing the Boot Camp, participating students join a biotech industry laboratory where they take part in scientific research, guided by a professional scientist and laboratory mentor. The research experience is complemented by science education forums which explore scientific fields that are implemented outside of the laboratory such as science writing, bioethics, public policy and computational biology. The forums also include a scientific journal club, guest speakers from the stem cell industry and a career development seminar where students gain valuable insights into bioscience careers from academic and industry scientists.
The Stem Cell Research Internship ends on the final day with a colloquium and award ceremony. This memorable event enables graduating fellows to show case their research to friends, family and local scientists during a formal poster presentation. Budding science writers are also invited to author an article for our blog which focuses on popular topics in stem cell research, written by high school students for high school students.
Stem Cell Boot Camp: During the first week of the program, participating students attend a preparatory lab training course called the Stem Cell Boot Camp. Held at Pathways to Stem Cell Science in our biotech industry training facility, this course provides hands-on training in essential bioscience techniques such as laboratory safety, pipetting, cell culture, stem cell culture, molecular biology, flow cytometry and microscopy.
Research Internship: After completing introductory training, students join a biotech industry laboratory where they contribute to a professional research project, broadly related to stem cells and regenerative medicine. Pathways to Stem Cell Science is the only science education providers to place students in industry laboratories.
Science Education Forums: Participating students attend three science education forums, which expand stem cell science from the laboratory to the outside world. These forums cover a range of fascinating topics from science writing and ethics to intellectual property and entrepreneurship. They also include a career development seminar, guest speakers and a scientific journal club.
Colloquium and Graduation: The Stem Cell Research Internship Program culminates on the last day with a poster presentation and graduation ceremony at our annual Colloquium. This annual event is open to the public and includes a poster presentation during which students showcase their work to friends, family and local scientists.

Cost and Session Information
The Stem Cell Research Internship is offered in the summer . A tuition fee is charged to cover the cost of lab supplies, instructor salaries, admin salaries, guest speakers, mentor stipends, bench fees and research materials. Financial aid may be available for qualifying students.
