Our online pre-college programs are designed to give you a preview of the UMass student experience, including college-level academics and being part of a learning community of high school students from all across the U.S. and the world.
January 3 - 7, 2022
Taught by the #1 globally ranked Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management, UMass Amherst's winter term sport academy is a one-week seminar focused on the modern front office. Students will learn about both the modern sport franchise as well as the ecosystem surrounding it, with a specific focus on Fenway Sport Management (FSM) and their properties. This will include an examination of specific franchises, such as the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC, as well as discussions on media, finance, agency strategies, and other related topics. The goal is to introduce each student to the comprehensive structure of the modern sport franchise, all while providing hands on experience as to what it would be like to major in sport management.
Course content will be delivered synchronously (live) via Zoom for two hours each day.
Asynchronous assignments, readings, case studies, and/or workshops will also be provided online for students to complete throughout the week and bring to class for discussion.
Schedule: Synchronous sessions Monday - Friday, 4 - 6pm (EST). Students must attend each live session to earn full credit for the program. 1 credit will be awarded for successful completion of this seminar.
The McCormack Department is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment in the classroom, and the sports industry. Young women and BIPOC who cannot meet the financial obligations of the Winter Sport Leadership Academy are encouraged to apply for a scholarship. Please see Tuition & Fees to learn how to apply.
