    Learn journalistic techniques and stylistic tricks to help communicate concisely and persuasively while developing your unique style and perspective.

    Students will develop and enhance their journalism skills, learn best practices for a changing professional environment and use New York City as the context for reporting and writing on a wide range of issues, from the personal to societal.

    Throughout the course, students will work on developing strong research and critical thinking skills through instruction and practice in interviewing, researching and fact-checking. Students will also learn how to develop their own voices on a wide range of issues, from the personal to societal: how to be funny, surprise or go against the crowd. The course will explore how to harness facts to bolster a point of view and hone analytical prowess. In addition, masters of the craft will help students sharpen pitches as well as share tips to get published.

    This course is taught by a wide variety of faculty who will imbue the general syllabus with a focus on their own areas of journalistic and topical expertise. Previous faculty includes Judith Matloff (author, professor at Columbia School of Journalism, former war correspondent).

    Course Highlights

    Summer Academy enables students to dive deep into a course of study, sharpening skills for their academic and professional futures. Each course is carefully designed to suit student interests and encourage intellectual curiosity.

    • Students will learn how to determine what information is and is not newsworthy, gain skills for how to be discerning about sources and be challenged to step into the reader’s shoes.

    • As part of the course, industry professionals will share their experiences, tips and wisdom and help acclimate students to the current state of Op-Ed journalism.

    • Students will compose a well-reported, well-written and fact-checked Op-Ed piece in the style of The New York Times.

    • Possible virtual site visits and activities include: campus tours of leading journalism schools of journalism, tours of culturally significant New York neighborhoods such as Jackson Heights and Chelsea, tours of world-class museums such as the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.

    • Previous guest speakers include: Clyde Haberman (Journalist, The New York Times), Mara Gay (Opinion Board Member, The New York Times), Amy Herman (Author: “The Art of Perception”), Paul Holmes (CEO for North America for Finsbury Global Strategic Communications and former global editor of Reuters) and Helen Olen (OpEd Contributor, Washington Post).
