    Overview

Southern Africa provides stunning wildlife views! Volunteering on this project is hardwork and a lot of fun. You will be involved in wrapping trees to prevent damage from elephants, removing alien plants, and collecting scientific data about the birds and elephants living on the reserve.

South Africa, a country twice the size of Texas, has developed rapidly since their first democratic election in 1994, but there is still a great deal of work that needs to be done in disadvantaged communities. As a volunteer with Projects Abroad, you can work on worthwhile projects and help others, whether you are on a college summer break, gap year, career break, or volunteer vacation.

Most major South African cities, including Cape Town, are highly developed and the country has a thriving tourism industry. However, unemployment levels are high and the gap between the rich and poor is wide. Poor township communities struggle with social problems such as alcoholism and domestic violence. The work of volunteers is crucial to making a difference in these communities, and Projects Abroad focuses on sustainable projects that will promote change long-term.

With eleven national languages and a variety of religions, South Africa truly is the “Rainbow Nation”. Thought to be the birthplace of mankind, South Africa historically attracted Europeans as a gateway to Africa. At the start of the 21st century, South Africa is leading the way in African development, and is seen as an inspiration to other countries.
