    Overview

In this one-week residential program at Eckerd College, you will develop and hone your writing talents in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, comics, screenwriting and more. Generate new work, examine your writing through workshop and individual conferences, and explore what it means to be a part of a larger literary community.

Pre-College at Eckerd offers rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors the opportunity to experience academic and residential life in our one-week programs in June. These academically rigorous hands-on programs put you in college-level courses to help prepare you for your future.

Students enrolled in the program will:

    • Workshop their own creative pieces
    • Attend college-level courses designed to teach students the craft of the short story, poetry, nonfiction, graphic/comics, young adult writing, and experimental writing
    • Have one-on-one conferences with a faculty member to discuss their work
    • Visit the Museum of Fine Arts to practice ekphrasis writing
    • Attend readings by faculty and engage in literary citizenship
    • Read their own polished work in front of an audience at the Young Writers Gala (parents/family are invited)
    • Enjoy the evenings with our residential counselors and the many activities they have planned
    • Spend the weekend exploring St. Petersburg. Weekend activity may include: soaking in some rays at St. Pete Beach, a walk through Sunken Gardens, adventures at the Tampa Lowry Park Zoo, or a day in downtown St. Petersburg.
