    Overview

Spend part of your summer on an epic wilderness adventure in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Travel by canoe and foot, connecting lakes, ponds, and rivers as you learn skills to thrive in the outdoors. If you’re looking to spend your summer challenging yourself and learning to live in the wild, this is the course for you.

During this course, you’ll canoe through the Adirondack Forest Preserve, one of the oldest protected lands in the country. You will begin by learning basic camping skills, like cooking and setting up a tent. As the course progresses, you’ll take on more challenging aspects of wilderness travel, including water navigating and paddling your canoe through a network of waterways. You will learn portaging techniques to carry the canoes and gear in order to link these waterways.

Along the way, you’ll also work on the leadership curriculum, learning about and then practicing skills like communication, group dynamics, and decision-making. You’ll continue practicing your growing leadership skills and challenging yourself to learn more. Because of this area’s unique natural and human history, we will also have lots of opportunities to check out local history, wildlife, ecology, and talk about public policy. By the end of this course, you’ll have the leadership and outdoor skills to pursue a lifetime of adventure.

Whether this is your first backcountry camping trip or your tenth, this course is designed to maximize hands-on learning and doing in the backcountry. For some, this course will get you ready for a 30-day NOLS expedition; for others, it will be a springboard to jump start your own outdoor adventures.
