The New York YMCA World Teen Camp is an international sleepaway camp that promotes language acquisition through authentic learning and cross-cultural friendship. Campers from over 20 counties live, learn and have fun together across four dual immersion language villages—French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin. July 12-25.
International and American students live, learn and have fun together in a traditional camp setting just 90 minutes northwest of NYC. World Teen Camp consists of four dual immersion language villages—French, German, Spanish, and Mandarin—which allow campers, ages 12-16, to be fully immersed in the language they are learning alongside peers who are native speakers of that language. Thus, campers are both learners and teachers—receiving instruction and practice in their target language, while serving as an expert in their native language.
Each village contains a maximum of 20 campers, 10 of whom are native speakers of English and 10 of whom are native speakers of the target language for that village. Under the instruction of certified, bilingual language teachers and the supervision of college-age counselors who are also bilingual, campers will spend about 50% of their day immersed in their target language.
Through a combination of academic and recreational activities, campers learn in tandem--building proficiency in their target language while developing friendships that last well past the last day of camp. Blending the fun of a traditional sleepaway program with the skills needed to navigate a diverse, multilingual global community, World Teen Camp offers your teen the opportunity to meet same age peers who are native speakers of their target language, develop lifelong friendships and create shared memories that will inspire and promote language learning during and after camp, and increase their bilingual and bicultural understanding through authentic language use and instruction.
World Teen Camp takes place at the New York YMCA Camp just 90 minutes outside of NYC. Our beautiful 1000+ acre facility includes three lakes, miles of hiking trails, several large playing fields, low and high ropes courses, and so much more. Campers will enjoy an incredible variety of activities including traditional sports, swimming, archery, crafts, canoeing and kayaking, team-building and hiking.
