    Overview

    The Summer Scholar Program (SSP) in the Department of Chemistry at Illinois Tech is intended for accomplished high school and community college students who are passionate about learning and are interested in doing some hands-on chemistry research. 

    Research areas include (but are not limited to) bioanalytical chemistry, computational chemistry and biochemistry, environmental chemistry, forensic chemistry, and medicinal chemistry related to energy and sustainability science, materials science, sensor science and technology, computational science, data science, bioanalysis, and health with real-world applications.

    Selected students will be paired with a faculty adviser in the department and will work in their research lab for a period of 8 to 10 weeks over summer 2023. Exact dates will be determined based on student and adviser availability. High school and college-level students who are interested in gaining hands-on chemistry research experience and are capable of commuting to Illinois Tech’s campus are welcome to apply. 

    Cost and Session Information

    Cost: No cost; program fees will be covered for students who are accepted into the program

    Date and Time: Flexible; students are required to work 30 hours per week for eight to 10 weeks over the course of summer 2023 based on their availability and faculty adviser availabilityBegins on approximately May 15, but depends on when students are done with school

    Eligibility: Rising 10th–12th graders (ages 14–17) and community college students who have taken at least one chemistry course
