High School students will become Film Directors in this 3-week summer intensive led by two instructors/film producers from Stanford's MFA Program in Documentary Film. The in-person program includes technical training, equipment, new directors' workshops, and hands-on filmmaking on-location. Students come away with a festival-ready 3-5 min film and prepared for more collaboration, leadership, college film programs, and paths forward in the industry. Grades 10-12+; No experience necessary.

Week 1: In-Class at Terra Marin School. Looking at smart festival docs, students will outline their creative pitch for a 3-5 min film (topics assigned; environment, social issues). We also train them on 4K cameras, sound, and editing.

Week 2: Shoot week on-location (in Marin) with instructors. Students will shoot and direct their vision in co-directing pairs, with special in-the-field shooting exercises and prompts led by doc filmmakers - Jake and Annie. Students will also have in-class critiques of their own footage and of landmark documentaries.

Week 3: Edit week at Terra Marin School. Discussing story structure and post-production design, students will edit on Adobe Premiere Pro (provided) and complete a festival-ready film. The Program culminates in a community screening with a Q&A - and Reception!
