    Overview

Essential Cell Culture Techniques is a 5-day course that enables COLLEGE STUDENTS to gain professional industry lab skills for graduate school, internships and employment. Students simply sign-up with no waiting or competing to gain the skills they need to improve their resume, graduate research outcomes & appeal to employers.

    INTRODUCTION.

Human cell culture is a widely used laboratory technique that enables cells – the building blocks of life – to be cultured, studied and manipulated under controlled conditions outside of the body. Human cell culture is practiced in almost every biomedical laboratory throughout the world. For this reason, it is a requisite skills that aspiring scientists should learn before seeking professional employment in the biomedical sciences industry.

Because higher institutions do not teach human cell culture to the standard required by employers, we have developed a program specifically designed to prepare college students for working in a professional cell culture laboratory. Our 5-day course is taught in modern cell culture facilities by industry scientists with decades of cell culture experience. It provides comprehensive training in the derivation, handling, cryopreservation, characterization, manipulation and long-term culture of commonly used human cell types. Participating students receive a technical training certificate in validated cell culture techniques and work-based skills that translate to any cell culture laboratory. They also design and implement their own cell culture experiment and learn advanced methods for establishing contamination free cell culture facilities.

Whether you're new to cell culture or looking to hone your current skills, our professional cell culture workshop provides the perfect opportunity to learn critical techniques, gain an advantage and network with cell culture professionals. Apply today and start building your resume in professional lab skills for future internships and employment.

    WHY THIS COURSE IS ESSENTIAL.

Human cells are complex to grow and must be handled aseptically with the utmost care, under rigorously controlled conditions in specialized cell culture laboratories. Because of these stringent requirements, the procedures that are used to culture human cells are also complex and can only be learned from experienced cell culturists in properly equipped cell culture facilities – like the facilities at Pathways to Stem Cell Science.

Very few colleges house the specialized training facilities that are needed to provide professional cell culture training during undergraduate or graduate degree programs. Those that do, typically lack the resources to comprehensively train every student in the large classes they are required teach. Most students consequently leave college with little to no cell culture experience and are forced to learn or perfect these skills after beginning professional lab work. This places an undue burden on future employers, who lack the time and man power to train inexperienced scientists.

Expecting busy working labs to provide basic training is not only burdensome, it also puts new recruits under immense pressure to learn critical techniques "on the job" from mentors who may be unsuited to training novice scientists. Students who learn complex cell culture procedures from busy or unfocused mentors almost always acquire "bad habits" that lead to technical errors, costly delays and persistent contaminations. These issues are further perpetuated when poorly trained scientists go onto become the mentors for future generations. To avoid these issues, employers look for people with prior experience in essential techniques like human cell culture. Employers also favor individuals with professional lab experience, as individuals who can begin work quickly with minimal oversight and training save time and money.
