    Overview

In this class open to grades 6-8, students will learn how to write compelling and evocative short stories. We will read and analyze stories by masters of the genre, such as Tobias Wolff, Junot Diaz, and Toni Cade Bambara, and experiment with different categories of fiction, including realistic, science fiction, and micro-fiction (very short stories).

Students will craft their own works of short fiction, workshop the stories of their classmates, and, using feedback from classmates and the instructor, revise their pieces into polished works. To sharpen their creative writing skills, students will also complete activities on topics such as character development, plot structure, and imagery. At the end of the course, students will create an anthology of their work to present to friends and family.
