I'm Lisa, Casey F's Mom. I just wanted to say thank you for Casey's great experience at Camp Shane! His intro to Camp Shane was a whirlwind. He had waaaayyy different plans than going to'fitness' camp as a 1st time camper at 15 years old but his 'friends' had their own plans.... All spring I had hoped to get him to do anything more positive than be home all summer with these 'friends' but it was the 1st day after school ended that we needed a definite plan B. I know firsthand that we take an action when the pain is great enough...and the pain was great enough...Casey was at camp FOUR days later! Honestly when I dropped Casey off that first day, I had no idea what to expect because camp was empty. All 3 of my boys (Casey has 2 older brothers) went to a 'regular' sleep away when they were younger...you got there...hugged your friends and continued to 'play' all summer. Here you come, you get weighed, get your BMI measured, see a nutritionalist and the work begins. A completely different and opposite experience... I held my breath until I saw that HUGE smile on his face on visiting day because we weren't able to speak and I knew it had been a life changing experience for him! Casey's counselors were EXCEPTIONAL!!! His older brothers love him to pieces but it was his counselors that have lived his life, and because his brothers are not able to identify with him struggling through weight and self esteem issues, these counselors really helped him so much in every way! When he came home he was so sad because he really missed everything about his experience and I asked him what his favorite part of camp was.... I thought he'd say he loved soccer, baseball, water sports...his answer was that his favorite part of this camp was that there was no judgment. That was it. No judgment of people that are around him in this negative world we live in...... Almost 3 months later and Casey is doing great! He's joined our local gym and bicycles there about 4-5 times a week and continues to eat healthy, read ingredients in the supermarket before we buy something new and even tells his 2 older brothers how unhealthy, bad and gross his daily ex-favorite Taco Bell meal really is for them! Camp Shane's accepting environment has been a life saver for him and I can't begin to tell you how wonderful an experience this was for Casey..both inside and out..thank you a million times!
