Brandeis University’s Precollege Online Program offers flexible, online courses in Women’s Health and Global Health for high school students. You’ll learn from Brandeis University professors, be guided by a mentor well-versed in your course subject, and earn a Certificate of Completion.
The courses are 100% online, meaning that you can complete the course whenever it works with your schedule. There will be 30 hours of overall course time over 2 or 4 weeks, depending on the session you choose, including video lessons, unit assignments, and access to your mentor.
The courses offered are:
Women’s Health: Biology and Wellness
Biology and Wellness How does the particular biology of women relate to their health? What diseases affect women more than men? How does the social standing of women impact their wellness and their access to treatment? You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the genetics, anatomy and physiology of women, including hormones and reproductive health. We’ll take an in-depth look into select diseases such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). If you are thinking about taking pre-med in college or are considering a future in women’s health, this course is for you.
Global Health: When the World Gets Sick
When the World Gets Sick How do infectious diseases start? How do they spread? What is their effect on public policy, the economy, and our rights as human beings? Get a multi-faceted look at pandemics, focusing on tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Other courses on disease concentrate primarily on science; this one traces the effects throughout our society. You will also learn how you can lobby for change through persuasive writing techniques. This course is a must if you’re thinking about a future in pre-med, STEM, government or not-for-profit. Learn through video lessons by Professor Cynthia Tschampl and distinguished guests.
