Genetics & Clinical Trials exposes students to research and questions as they perform hands-on laboratory experiments made to reflect a graduate school experience.

Dr. Vince Coljee, a Harvard scholar and the first person to clone and sequence two human genes began the 2019 course with a dive into the nature of DNA. Students were able to isolate their own DNA using a PCR machine. They then visited the Harvard Museum of Natural History to engage in an ancestry scavenger hunt and a Q&A lunch and lab tour with Patrick Dennett, a Harvard Bauer Core Laboratory scientist.

The class explored the science of ancestry by looking into the concept of preferential inheritance and genetic evolution. Dr. Coljee also discussed the mechanics of current clinical trials which aim to answer the question, "how do we attain usable data and discover life changing breakthroughs?"

At the end of the course, students presented their research and finding on the advent of vaccines, antibiotics, and other medical triumphs. Students were also able to design their own mock clinical trials on subjects they chose and present their research to the class.

Finally, Dr. Coljee had the students amplify their own DNA which was sent off to be sequenced so that every student could receive their own genetic reading as the icing on the cake.

Schedule and dates for the 2021 summer program will be announced soon! Check out our website for the latest details and information.
