If you want to study medicine, start now with our Epidemics, Outbreaks, & Contagion high school summer program! Learn the basics of medicine, virology, & immunology and everything you need to be prepared for pre-med college courses. Study diseases like HIV, tuberculosis, malaria influenza, MRSA, Ebola, and many more.
Students seeking a career in medicine: Virology and Immunology are key courses in the pre-med curriculum. Now you don’t have to wait until college to explore these areas!
Covid-19, Measles, smallpox, cholera, HIV, tuberculosis, malaria influenza, MRSA, Ebola – many of the most deadly contagious diseases are not fully understood. During this three week course, we will explore the nature of many of these pathogens and discuss their transmission, prevention and treatment. Specific focus will be on HIV infection, influenza and cholera, but attention will also be given to additional viral, bacterial and parasitic infections.
How do microbes damage their host cells and impair structure and function? How do they become pathogenic? Labs during this unit included sample culturing, epidemic simulations, and a mock diagnosis and treatment of infections.
We anticipate that this will be a popular program! Apply now. Want to think about it a bit more? Join our mailing list so you don’t forget.
This is a competitive admissions summer research program designed for teens.

"I really enjoyed the program and teacher. I liked how we not only looked at the biology of contagious diseases but also the ethics, finances, etc. that goes into finding the vaccines and medications for the diseases. I also liked how we performed various experiments, the PARE project, and the BIOSCANN simulation as it gave me a glimpse of how the world of medical research is like."- Student Comment - July 13, 2018

"I really love this program. We were able to do a lot of hands-on experiments. The professor taught us a lot of knowledge on how to make medicine as well as different diseases. She made the class very interesting through lots of games and lectures."- Student Comment - July 13, 2018
'My program was a three-week course focused on contagious disease. We learned about different diseases and their mechanisms, including pathogenesis, transmission, microbiology, and social aspects of interventions. We reviewed modern outbreaks such as Ebola, the flu and Zika. Jenn was a very knowledgeable and effective teacher and I looked forward to class everyday. I particularly enjoyed the field trips we had to the labs, since we had a hands-on experience and sneak-peak into work life!'- Student Comment - July 14, 2017
'I absolutely loved my program I learned so much from Jenn. Diseases are so fascinating to learn about and I wish it would have lasted longer. Jenn is extremely knowledgeable and a great mentor. She is always happy and extremely personable. She made going to class always enjoyable and exciting. HIV, Zika, Ebola and the flu more. She used a variety of teaching methods to spice things up from movies to lectures to group presentations. The labs were extremely unique and definitely a once in a lifetime experience! I will miss the program so much! Way cooler than school! I wish Jenn was my teacher at school. Paul was also very great. The field trips were eye-opening and really made me realize how much I want to be a medical researcher.'- Student Comment - July 14, 2017
