Gain hands-on lab experience while studying the transmition and contamination processes of contagious diseases. Acquire knowledge valuable not only in scientific fields such as medicine and epidemiology, but take the next step and analyze the effect on public safety and health on a global scale.

Students will learn about the various kinds of infectious diseases that exist, the transmission and contamination process, as well as differentiating between viruses, pathogens, worms, and bacteria. They will observe how these diseases have evolved over the course of time in terms of severity, resistance to methods of eradication, and become familiar with different strains and species of these diseases. Join us for this exciting pre-med summer program.

    Cost and Session Information

There are two sessions of this one week program. This program will run the week of June 24 and July 8.

    • “The teacher was very knowledgeable. I learned a lot, and I might be interested to pursue this as a career. I liked how everyday, we learned so many new things both in the lecture and the lab. I liked how at the end, we had a final project, designing and performing an experiment using anything we learned this week. The educational content and the teacher were stellar!”

    • “I liked that we really got to work with bacteria and our teacher was able to fit a lot of material into one week while still making the class enjoyable.”

    • “Our program was based on infectious diseases and included how bacteria, viruses, and the microbes become pathogens(harmful). It also focused on how bacteria could be identified using multiple tests in the lab where we spent the better half of the days. I liked working in the lab and applying the concepts learned during the lecture time.”

    • "We talked/learned about diseases(what they are, what they do, how they come to exist and how they spread) I liked learning more about disease and applying the things I know before walking in. And Rami’s teaching style definitely allows for a question friendly environment. He always welcomed questions and had the knowledge to answer almost all of them."

    • "I really enjoyed this contagion program because the content that Rami taught was very interesting. I also liked the way Rami taught since he asked us a lot of questions and involved the students in class. He told us many cool stories and you can tell he has a lot of knowledge and experience with disease."

    • "The program was very fascinating for me and I learned a lot about infectious disease in a new and original and interesting way. The teacher was excellent for this class he’s way knowledgeable and has many stories to tell as a former surgeon’s assistant."

    • 'In our class we learned about a wide variety of topics from smallpox epidemics to how the antibodies work. There was a lot of information presented during each class period... Contagion is a very interesting topic, so class was automatically better than most other classes. Mr. Alwan is friendly, engaging and is extremely knowledgeable.'

    • 'The teacher was very helpful, interactive and clearly passionate about what he was teaching which created a fun, intelligent and open atmosphere where in we were fully able to digest all of the information and enjoy learning. The program itself was also very good. I was able to learn a lot about infectious disease in a fun manner. '

    • 'The program was very informative and interesting. The personal stories from the teacher helped add a bit more depth to the study of viruses instead of being limited to simply what textbooks and case studies say. The bacteria experiments were also fun as a sort of basic introduction to the study of microorganisms. '
