    The Pre-Med Program at the Baruch Leadership Academy provides outstanding rising 10th through 12th grade students the opportunity to explore a wide range of medical topics. Students get first hand experience as they participate in laboratory dissections led by Baruch College faculty members and meet with esteemed physicians. Find out more!

    The Academy strives to give students a comprehensive overview of the medical field through the following initiatives:

    - Classroom lectures and workshops

    - Investigation of medical careers as well as an introduction to the medical school admissions process

    - Hands on laboratory dissections and activities

    - Field trips to prominent museums within New York City

    A Brief Selection of Pre-Med Topics Covered:

    Microbiology: Two-Part Laboratory Activity

    During the first part of the microbiology lab, students are taught about the factors that control enzyme activity as well as the environmental factors that control the growth of microbiological organisms. Students are taught standard microbiological techniques in order to inoculate 28 test tubes with various bacteria. The tubes are left to incubate at various temperatures for analysis the next day.

    During the second part of the microbiology lab, students learn about bacterial cell morphology, bacterial colony morphology, and bacterial broth growth analysis. The skills and terms taught during the lecture are used to analyze the inoculated plates and tubes used during the previous day. The students record their temperature growth curves and determine the optimal growth temperature for four species of bacteria. Finally, students are taught about histological staining technique in order to observe and describe the morphological features of E. coli under the microscope.

    Pre-Medical Students Panel

    Three pre-medical students provide details about their experience applying to college as well as their undergraduate student pre-medical experience. The Leadership Academy students have the opportunity to candidly ask questions about what being a pre-medical student is really like. The discussion includes topics of pre-medical course requirements, science laboratories, and acquiring shadowing experiences.

    Introduction to Neurosurgery

    Students view real images and real video stream of neurosurgeries preformed by a prominent neurosurgeon. After the viewing, the neurosurgeon describes each procedure to the students and teaches them about the cause and effect of each tumor in addition to the treatment plan for each patient shown.

    Applying to Medical School and Writing Personal Statements

    Students learn about the medical school application process as well as what they should be doing now in order to help them gain admission in the future. The class explores various topics of importance including writing personal statements, devoting time to extra-curricular activities, passion projects, and work experience, as well as embodying the attributes of a successful physician.

    CPR /AED/First Aid Training and Certification

    Students receive a CPR/AED/First Aid training and certification with the American Heart Association. This course begins with an interactive overview of the cardiovascular system, which is then practically applied to CPR and the AED. The students receive individual instruction on the proper mechanics for performing CPR and learn how to perform CPR for adults, children and infants. Students are then individually taught how to use the AED. Working in pairs, students put all of their skills together to perform CPR while their partner gets the AED ready for use. Lastly, the students receive training in basic first aid.
