Our Gap Year approach – The Global Routes Independent Track (GRIT) – is tailored to the individual goals and interests of each participant with the dedicated support and mentorship from Adam Aronovitz, Global Routes Director and Global Routes' expert travel directors.

Our GRIT Gap experiences are best for intrepid, motivated, and engaged explorers, ages 18+ at the time of travel, who are seeking a more independent experience over a group-based program, but who also want expert support along the way to plan and navigate their Gap experience. Once you’ve filled out your ‘Design your Gap’ intake form on our website, eligible “gappers” will be invited to a free consultation call to explore your goals and options.

Through our initial conversations, we’ll learn more about your interests and goals, and place you with a partner organization abroad based on your schedule, budget and interests. We’ll support you with your pre-trip planning and will be in contact throughout your experience to debrief and plan next steps.

Traveling abroad for any extended period of time is exciting and transformative. Your experience will have a long-lasting impact on the way you see the world and your confidence as a traveler. Still, there’s a lot to consider. We’re here to make sure you have the most meaningful experience possible by guiding you through your program development process.

Live on a reforestation project in South India, Kenya, or Haiti, working on water conservation projects, planting tree forests, leading environmental education initaitives, and living with a community of like-minded volunteers

Teach English to Buddhist monk students in Nepal while basking in the glory of the Himalayas. Take a break from teaching to complete one of Nepal’s famed teahouse treks.

Teach soccer and English in the altiplano in Bolivia while mastering your Spanish.

Get certified through a Permaculture Design Course in Thailand and work on an eco-community.

Become fluent in Spanish while taking language immersion courses, and volunteer leading trekking groups in the Western Highlands of Guatemala.

Even though it's been several years since my semester with Global Routes in East Africa, I think about it every day. It was the single most formative experience of my life. I not only learned about language and teaching, but I also learned to assert myself, even when the words didn't come very easily. I learned about finding routine abroad, the power of vulnerability and making connections with people, and the value of education. I discovered a drive to succeed and a love for humanity within myself that wildly influenced my choices in the years to come.

My leaders were fantastic at guiding me through the inherent challenges of living abroad. Although it was an adjustment to live with a host family and teach in a classroom, I was given all the tools I needed to thrive, and overcoming those challenges was one of the best parts of my experience. I continue to look to my leaders as mentors and feel like I can reach out to the greater Global Routes community for support as I continue on my path.

Overall, I was very impressed with Global Routes' pre- and post- program communication as well as with the program itself. I believe that Global Routes offers the greatest and most creditable gap year programs out there!

I can not express how amazing my trip to Costa Rica with Global Routes was. I was looking to go with a reliable organization with an experience that wasn't just "a huge group of American students obnoxiously traveling through a foreign country"- and Global Routes was the perfect fit. My time in Costa Rica was authentic, fun, and unforgettable. Global Routes organized everything so perfectly; our home stay village was located in rural Costa Rica in the mountains and was home to the most amazing people. All of the activities, including the un-planned, spontaneous ones were perfect. I milked cows with my home stay mother in the morning, played soccer with the best players I've ever met, and repelled a waterfall in the rainforest. I made such strong bonds with my home-stay family as well and with the other students in my group. Everyone in our group, including our leaders, grew very close and also grew a lot individually. I personally feel I came back with such a great perspective and attitude on my life. I would highly recommend Global Routes for students who are looking for an amazing, authentic adventure in another country.
