Our custom programs focus on social and environmental justice and are rooted in experiential education. We provide authentic travel opportunities, collaboration with local experts and innovators, immersive experiences, and deep reflection.

Choose from one of our pre-designed Custom Programs or collaborate with us to design a program that is entirely unique to your group.  Our experienced staff offer expertise in program development and group facilitation to support you in building out your dream program from conceptualization to implementation.

Global Routes can customize almost any destination for your group. Typically, we start with locations where we have long-established programs and dedicated in-country staff. Given our 50-plus years in the field, we have deep relationships across the US, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia, and Africa. *If you’re interested in a specific place, let us know! We have contacts and partners across the globe.

We can support individuals and/or groups with developing summer programs, alternative winter or spring break trips, Gap Year programs, and more. From our programs, many groups seek:

    Meaningful community service
    Social and environmental justice education
    Authentic cross-cultural exchange
    Ecologically responsible travel/adventure
    Improved language skills
    Strengthened group dynamics
    Personal empowerment
    Mastery of global competencies
Learning traditional arts, crafts, music, and customs
    Exploration of the natural environment
Increased global awareness and global citizenship

Global Routes handles all aspects of program development and logistics: program itineraries, activities and budget, reservations for all accommodations, meals, international and in-country travel, and the selection, prep, and oversight of the host community service projects and homestay. We can also organize all other program components, including recreational, cultural, and adventure-based activities.

A lead staff member works closely with our partners throughout the planning process and will select the best field instructor to lead the program, create a communications plan to support the program in the field, and provide ongoing field support 24-hours a day.

“Each year students return from their Global Routes Service Immersion program with a thirst to travel, a broadened view of the global world they encompass as well as a new perspective on what really matters to them. These programs challenge students to think globally and connect with diverse communities. Through these experiences, students recognize how similar we all are, no matter the miles between us.”

I am very happy that I chose Global Routes because I had the most amazing summer that I have ever had. I had so much fun and our group got so close that we became a family. Between a service aspect to the program, dinner stays with locals, and fun/relaxing times with your friends, Global Routes has a bit of everything. I did the St. Vincent LIA program, and learned so much over the course of the month that we were gone. I felt incredibly immersed into the Vincentian culture and community because of the way that the program is structured. Rather than staying in a hotel or house with just your group, you stay with community members, who graciously welcome you into their homes, cook delicious food and teach you about their culture. The woman who we stayed with, Mama Cupid, welcomed us into her church every sunday and we, along with local families joined in singing soca gospel music all together. I learned how to cook Caribbean meals, how to speak like a Vincentian, learned lots about soca music, and made local friends that I know I will keep in touch with forever. We ran a summer camp for the kids aged 0-18 and played games all day with them like soccer, cricket, and dodgeball. We also did arts and crafts and made eachother countless friendship bracelets. The kids also taught us some of their own games that they learned growing up in Saint Vincent. I connected so well with the local kids in Saint Vincent that I still stay in touch with them 3 months later. The trip was overall a life changing experience and made me more of an attentive and appreciative person. I also learned to be open-minded and more positive. I highly, highly recommend Global Routes to any and all families! Sign up!!

My Global Routes experience was something I will never forget. I learned more than I ever thought possible. It was definitely a challenge but it for sure shaped me to become a better person. Our trip had 3 different phases, first the cultural orientation, the homestay and service project, then an incredible 3 day safari. Our cultural orientation was at the United African Alliance Community Center in Arusha. We learned a few things that would be super useful at the homestay, as well as bond, try some Tanzanian food, learn a bit of Swahili, and grow an appreciation for the welcoming Tanzanians. Our leaders, Adam and Mary, were clearly very experienced in these situations. They made me feel very welcomed and payed attention to me. I had gotten pretty sick on the airplane on the way there, and they made sure that every activity I was doing I was good with and was feeling better. The homestay and worksite was just an indescribable experience, I seriously do not know how to put it into words. It was just so surreal and educational. I had to kept reminding myself that that was their everyday life. I learned how to cook in the dark and with one flame, clean clothes with 2 buckets, use a squatty potty, and my personal favorite, the bucket bath. The building of the classroom was another unforgettable thing. Seeing the joy in the children and the fundis who helped us build the school was so heartwarming. Definitely challenging but super worth it. The safari was just crazy. It felt like a Disney ride. By the end of this trip, we were all one big happy and loving family. We have a very special bond. Asante sana Global Routes for this opportunity. If you are reading this, go on a Global Routes trip. You will not regret it.

This Global Routes trip was the best 2 weeks of my life! Although challenging at times, every moment was truly life changing. I created a new family with my fellow travelers, and the Tanzanians! It was a great experience in which I furthered my global mindfulness and gained a sense of community and family with all of the people I was with throughout the trip. My fellow travelers and I have become friends for life and I will never forget the warm smiles of all the Tanzanians. The trip was amazing and I would do it again in a heartbeat. None of it would have been possible without Global Routes. I truly recommend a Global Routes trip to anyone who wishes to touch others lives while becoming closer with the ones they travel with. If you have any doubts about going on a trip like this, I can assure you that Global Routes leaders offered tremendous amounts of support throughout the trip and they will not let you down.
