Year On offers gap year programs to help young adults develop the confidence, clarity, and direction necessary to make the leap from high school to college. Fellows volunteer abroad, gain real-world skills in San Francisco, and work with coaches throughout to build a foundation for life.
Why Year On?
We believe there is a gap in every young adult’s journey: the gap between high school and their next step. Bridging this gap means addressing some really important questions: Who am I? What do I want to do? How can I make the most out of college? How do I succeed without the structure of high school? How do I take my life, and my education, into my own hands?
Year On exists to help ambitious high school graduates answer these questions. It is not simply a year off to travel. It's a year dedicated to bettering themselves — on their own terms. Year On helps close this gap, equipping fellows with the tools, skills, and habits they need to define their own path to self-reliant adulthood. Our programs are built to give every fellow the confidence, grit, and self-reliance they need to succeed as a global citizen in tomorrow’s world.
If you are feeling burned out, a little lost, or unclear about what you want to do or who you want to be, you don't need a year off. You need a Year On.
Gap Semester Program
The Year On gap semester program is divided into two successive phases — Explore and Focus. Each phase builds upon the other as fellows learn new concepts and skills and put them into practice.
Phase 1: Explore Fellows begin by volunteering in one of our 5 Explore destinations: India, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, or Tanzania. Fellows choose from volunteer projects such as teaching English or computer skills, caring for disabled children and adults, environmental conservation, and women’s empowerment.
Phase 2: Focus Fellows then head to San Francisco where they work with coaches, attend life skill workshops, and build a portfolio of work. Fellows live together in our Year On dorm and work every day at our co-working space in SoMa, the heart of San Francisco’s startup world.
Cost and Session Information
The Year On gap semester program is $19,000 per semester. Our fellows come from all types of socio-economic backgrounds, and we aim to ensure access for all of them. To do this, we provide financial assistance for families who cannot afford the full Year On tuition amount.
We also offer a 9-month Year Experience for $24,000. This program includes 10 weeks of volunteering abroad, 10 weeks of skill-building workshops at our headquarters in San Francisco, and 12 weeks of a Launch phase where you apply what you've learned in the real world.
In addition to financial assistance, we offer a flexible payment program for families who wish to extend their payments over time. Admitted Fellows interested in our flexible payment plan should contact admissions directly. For more information on payment options, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
