Founded in 1975, SACI attracts students from the US and around the world for study abroad and graduate study.
Undergraduate and graduate visiting students may attend for a term or more in fall, spring, late spring, or summer. SACI offers a wide variety of both traditional and cutting-edge studio art and design courses as well as classes in art history spanning from medieval to contemporary art. For conservation students, there is the unique opportunity to participate hands-on in the conservation of historic works in Florence. Studio Art courses include Fresco Painting, Serigraphy, Printmaking, Photography, Digital Multimedia, Design, Installation and Performance Art, Video, Jewelry Design, Batik, Book Making, Sculpture, Ceramics, and many more.
SACI’s MFAs in Studio Art , Photography, and Communication Design are 2-year US-accredited degree programs in which students are challenged with diverse activities offering them the wide spectrum of the global art scene. Studio courses offer time to develop individual practices and to explore diverse approaches, methods and technologies. Academic classes engage in the most important historical and contemporary critical debates. Programs feature studio visits and field trips (within Italy and to Berlin, London, Paris, etc.)
In SACI’s MA in Art History students enroll for one academic year from September through July and earn 36 credits. They travel to art-historically important sites and major museums throughout Italy and elsewhere in Europe, study historiography and research methodology, and focus on a broad range of art history topics as well as those specific to their own research interests.
SACI’s Post-Baccalaureate Certificate programs are each 1 year of intensive graduate study in a selected Major Discipline within Conservation or Studio Art. They offer students unique opportunities to create a significant body of work as a basis for application to an advanced degree program. The programs include graduate seminars, reviews, field trips, lecture series, and student exhibitions.
In addition to late spring and summer courses in Florence, SACI offers a special 4 week/ 6 credit Venice Summer Program which features a Digital Photography course, exploring both color and black-and-white digital photographic techniques, and a Contemporary Art course focusing on Venice and the Biennale.
Alumni artists from many US partner schools, and from around the world, credit the supportive environment of the school and instructors with having a profound impact on their art careers.
Says one alumna, “SACIsimultaneously created an environment of creativity while also providing excellent resources for me to make art. They established a situation that enabled critical developments in my art to manifest and grow.”
The SACI Faculty is active in the Florentine art scene and introduces students to the traditional and contemporary art world in and around Florence. Courses are supplemented by field trips to museums, monuments, galleries, artists’ studios, and art fairs, as well as frequent opportunities to interact directly with contemporary artists and professionals working in Italy.
