Push yourself to climb high mountain passes. Explore quiet coves and paddle along pebbled beaches. Prepare yourself with skills to respond in an emergency. On this course, you’ll explore the coasts and mountains of Washington and British Columbia.
You’ll spend your days working hard at new outdoor skills as you learn about mountaineering and sea kayaking. You’ll spend your evenings focusing on leadership and outdoor living, then wake up in the morning and use those lessons to help you meet the next day’s challenges. This course is designed with busy students in mind—it fits in with the quarter system and focuses on essential outdoor skills for mountains and ocean, plus sets you up with the opportunity to earn a Wilderness First Aid certification.
Even more than the outdoor skills, this course focuses on leadership development. Pushing your comfort zone becomes a lesson in setting and following through on goals. Working through a group conflict is an opportunity to learn about communication and group dynamics. Making decisions about whether to paddle or remain in camp are an opportunity to learn about risk assessment and developing good judgment. With these experiences, you’ll build a foundation that will prepare you to be a leader, no matter what you decide to pursue in the future.
