Rescuing Leftover Cuisine is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides a volunteer platform to transport food from businesses to human service agencies who provide free and healthy meals for those in need.
As the number of people experiencing critical food insecurity continues to escalate, 40% of food is still being thrown out. Since 2017, RLC volunteer RESCUERS have rescued over 320,000 pounds of excess food that would have otherwise been tossed in the trash.
The Coronavirus pandemic has put already vulnerable individuals and families who were struggling to put food on the table and pay rent into an ongoing state of crisis. In addition, there is no safe public transport for people with no vehicle and local markets within walking distance are more expensive, yet offer fewer healthy options. This is a constant hurdle for low-income households, especially single parents and/or families that include elderly or immunocompromised member(s). This population is experiencing inaccessibility to fresh, nutrient-dense food and are therefore relying more so on foods with more preservatives, which are often higher in calorie but lower in nutrients, which results in poor nutrition and leads to a host of mental & physical health risks.
RLC Rescuers transport balanced meals prepared for donation from restaurants to permanent housing residents and Boston Public Schools households who are experiencing food insecurity. Since the start of the pandemic, we have successfully transported over 60,000 meals, over 7,000 of which have been delivered directly to the doorsteps of Massachusetts' most vulnerable residents.
Guidelines have been created to ensure a safe volunteering experience with no contact and no going indoors. All ages welcome and you may volunteer as an individual or as a team.
Each rescue averages 45 minutes of time and feeds about 40 people! Choose from food rescues that are walkable or commute via vehicle.
