The American Jewish Historical Society collects, preserves and makes available original documents for historical research. AJHS was founded in 1892 to foster awareness and appreciation of the American Jewish heritage in Boston.
In particular, the Newton Center branch of the Society is an archive that specifically collects and preserves the history of the Boston and Greater New England area Jewish Community. We are currently involved in a project to digitize all of our collections. Volunteers would be preparing historical documents for scanning. This project is a wonderful opportunity for high school age volunteers to learn what an archive is and how to use it for research. The experience would be extremely beneficial for those students planning on going on to college after high school where they will be required to do original research from archival records.
