A visually stunning and technically challenging craft, glass blowing is available as a summer program option for pre-college students seeking a unique experience. Glass blowing skills build from the basics of gathering, blowing and tool handling, to crafting glasses and other objects out of molten glass. These programs put safety first, with expert glass blowers teaching students how to safely handle extreme temperatures while shaping the material into useful and beautiful products. Coursework can be broken into different types of glass blowing. In hot shop blowing, students learn furnace charging and cold work on previously blown objects. In flame shop blowing, the focus is on using heat and gravity to form objects out of soft Moretti glass, borosilicate glass and other types. Participants can also learn neon sign and jewelry making.
