When aspiring artists and motivated musicians graduate from high school, there are plenty of art schools and performing arts colleges that are eager to help them develop their talents. Some are dedicated art schools that offer traditional majors like painting and ballet or more specialized areas of study like film scoring and interior architecture. Others are conventional universities that offer arts majors as part of a diverse range of disciplines.
Admission to colleges for performing arts and art schools often require an audition or the submission of a portfolio, allowing the schools to assess applicants’ best work. The process can be competitive and the standards high, but students admitted to art school get to study the history of their field, learn techniques from accomplished professionals, and immerse themselves in the practice of creating art. Studying within a college arts program may be a great choice even for students who have no plans to hang their work in galleries or perform on stage. A major in music therapy could help a student use his passion to help others. Studying graphic design could lead to a career in marketing. And focusing on sculpture or drawing could form the foundation for work in the museum world.
