Keegan Brush studied music at The Catholic University of America. How did you discover your passion for music education and choral studies? Growing up, I have always been involved with music in and outside of school, but my passion for music education and choral studies began in high school. I knew I wanted to go into education because I enjoyed tutoring my fellow classmates, but was conflicted about what I wanted to teach. My favorite subjects were math and music but I was much more passionate about music. When I approached my high school choral director about going into music ...

Music Rachael Dobosz

Rachael Dobosz studied music at DePaul University's School of Music. Why did you pick this particular college? When I began looking at colleges towards the end of my time in high school I knew I wanted to pursue a performance career in a city with a great music culture, as well as have the opportunity to take liberal arts courses. I was interested in the DePaul School of Music when I learned about the programs within the music school that focused on all aspects of the music industry and the opportunity to explore other courses and subjects to contribute to ...

Music Theatre John Cavaseno

John Cavaseno studied music theatre at State University of New York. How did you discover your passion for music and your instrument? My high school English teacher once told me, “You are so quiet in class but when you’re on stage you light up!” I am lucky that I found my passion pretty early in life and I’ve continued to pursue it everyday. What's your favorite part about performing? If I had to pick a favorite part about performing, I would say it’s the feeling I get when I first step on stage. Performing for an audience and giving your ...

Filmmaking

My fascination with videos started when I was eight years old. At the time, the only video camera I had access to was my sister’s LeapPad, which she had received the prior Christmas. With absolutely no idea what we were doing, we would prop the cheap, plastic tablet up against whatever furniture we could find and just make absolute fools of ourselves on camera. And to me, it was the coolest thing I had ever done. The feeling of amazement I felt seeing myself on that screen was unmatched. Pure joy. And so, I turned my eyes to the sky. ...

Ane Arrieta studied dance at University of Hartford's The Hartt School. How did you discover your passion for dance? Studying the law

This post is part of our new series, in which students and young adults tell their own stories of discovering, nurturing, and pursuing their passions. By my third semester as a journalism major at Northeastern University, I was pretty sure I wouldn’t end up working in the field. It was my third shot at deciding what I wanted to do with my life, and at first, it seemed like the right path. I had decided on a journalism major because I wanted to change the world with my writing. In my introductory courses, I wrote long pieces on student mental ...

Writing hands

This post is part of our new series, in which students and young adults tell their own stories of discovering, nurturing, and pursuing their passions. My English lesson at my all-girls school in London was the highlight of my day. While everyone else trudged up the five flights of stairs to classroom, Tilly and I strode, our heavily-annotated copies of Shakespeare’s Othello under our arms. While the teacher presented essay plans for us to use on the national exams we would take at the end of the year, Tilly and I would write notes in the margins of each other’s ...

Teaching at City Year

This post is part of our new series, in which students and young adults tell their own stories of discovering, nurturing, and pursuing their passions. When I began applying to colleges, the main question in my head was: “How will this college help me change the world?” My passion for social change began when I was 13 years old and moved across the country to go to boarding school in Massachusetts. I was still discovering my passions and figured that the best way to find things I liked to do would be to try new things. During my first winter ...
