How Tenacity Changed My Misconceptions

Tenacity is a non-profit organization whose mission is to teach tennis and literacy to children in the Greater Boston area who otherwise might not receive the opportunity. Andrew Miller-Smith, a junior at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, found Tenacity through TeenLife's Community Service Fair. Volunteering with Tenacity showed Andrew that community service can go beyond being a school requirement, and can be a life-changing experience where one can truly make a difference. Upcoming Volunteer, Job, & Internship Opportunites
January & February (Boston): Join the city of Boston in partnership with Boston Cares on January 18th for a day of service to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For students interested in volunteering over February vacation, applications for Teen Teamworks (Feb. 15th-18th) are due by February 1st. February 6th & 7th (Chestnut Hill): Volunteer to help out at TeenLife Boston’s 2010 Community Service Fair. We are looking for volunteers to help with pre-fair bag stuffing on February 6th, and with setup, management, and clean up on the day of the Fair (February 7th). February Vacation (Quincy): Spend your February Vacation volunteering to help sort donations for children in need at the Giving Factory with with Cradles to Crayons. Have some extra jeans lying around or know some friends who do? Start a Engage your neighborhood, school, sports club or faith group in a collection drive for pants. Be sure to advertise your opportunity. Then see how many pants you can collect. When your drive is complete drop your donation off at our Quincy warehouse. Winter & Spring Break (Boston): City Year for Kids is a fun and educational week-long program that runs during the winter and spring school vacations. The program is located at four sites throughout Boston and serves 700 children. Volunteer to be a Team Leader on February 15th-19th or April 20th-24th. Spring Semester (Greater Boston): Looking for a Spring internship? Internship Connection has been contacted by companies in Boston offering Spring internships in film, bio-tech, marketing and government. Contact Carole Jabbawy by January 11th for details.
Spring Semester (Cambridge): Science Club for Girls is now hiring young women in 7th-12th to work afterschool as a Junior Mentor and provide support for an afterschool program while serving as a role model for elementary age girls. Applications are due by January 27th, 2010. Spring Semester (Greater Boston): Citi Performing Arts Center is now scheduling interviews and auditions for the Spring High School Internship program taking place weekday afternoons from March 22-May 15, 2010 . Auditions must be scheduled by March 8th. Teens can also join a Neighborhood Ensemble and perform at the Shubert Theatre with some of the best area performing arts groups (March 24th-May 15th). School Year (Mass. Bay): Get involved with American Red Cross of Massachusetts and start a Red Cross Club at your school! Teens can also serve as Red Cross Ambassadors and take part in a diverse array of opportunities that include helping out at the Red Cross office in Cambridge or serving at its Boston Food Pantry. School Year (Dorchester): SCI Dotwell wants teens to serve as Youth Council Members. Recruit and engage your peers to participate in teaching, learning, reflection, and action that combines relevant social community-based curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community. Summer (Greater Boston, North Shore): Serve as a Crew Worker in the Food Project’s Summer Youth Program and work to grow and distribute thousands of pounds of organic produce for people in need. Gain invaluable skills of teamwork, accountability, civic participation, and communication. Participants receive a stipend. Year-Round (Salem): The Northeast Animal Shelter is looking for Shelter Ambassadors to greet guests and make sure that animals at the shelter are safe and well cared for. Teens can also be Kennel Volunteers and respond to the emotional and physical needs of the cats and dogs entrusted in the shelter's care. Year-Round (Jamaica Plain): Help Ethos promote the personal well-being, dignity and autonomy of seniors by delivering home and community based care. Ethos has plenty of ongoing opportunities for teens including: friendly visitor, office assistant, telephone reassurance caller, medical escort, & group and internship projects. Want more? Students under 15 can participate in the The Natural Wonders program in Costa Rica, which is designed for students ages 13 – 15. The High Mountain Institute's Rocky Mountain Semester (RMS) is a unique opportunity for juniors and some seniors in high school to spend a semester living, traveling, and studying in the mountains of central Colorado and the canyons of southeastern Utah. In essence, the Rocky Mountain Semester combines some of the best qualities of a rigorous boarding school with the adventure of a summer wilderness expedition. TeenLife has paired up with Young Broadcasters of America (YBA) to create a live webcast from the Annual Community Service Fair on February 7th. Young Broadcasters of America teaches on camera communication skills to students 10-18 years old, out of their training studios in Natick. YBA produces a nightly sports talk show for kids, and a live Trendy Teen show every Sunday afternoon. This free event features 40 non-profits willing to engage teens and 35 supporting exhibitors and sponsors. Families and educators are encouraged to pre-register to receive important pre- and post-event information, a free Guide to Community Service listing 150 teen-friendly non-profits, a gift bag containing samples and special offers, and free raffle tickets for prizes from participating retailers.
Upcoming Contests
The Melanoma Foundation of New England’s "Your Skin Is In" Contest is encouraging high school students across New England to stop pre-prom tanning both outdoors and in tanning beds. Students are asked to read the "Facts of Tanning" and sign a "No-Tanning Pledge” to stop tanning before their proms. Schools that get at least 70% of their class to sign will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win $500 or $1,000 for their class. Two schools from each state will win $500 and two schools will win $1,000 for the most pledges signed and for the highest percentage of pledges signed. Pledges must be signed online or returned to The Foundation by February 2nd, 2010.
