Insights on High School Admissions

Public or Private? Finding the Right Fit

Facing high school admissions can be daunting, whether you're coming out of a public junior high, a private middle school, or a parochial K-8. While some students will thrive in the (usually) smaller, more intense environment of an independent or private school, others find the that size and diversity of public schools give them room to breathe and flourish. No Boys (or Girls!) Allowed: Single-Sex Schools
If all-girls or all-boys schools sound stuffy or backwards, think again. They can offer students real advantages in the classroom now, and later on in college. But worries about socializing are understandable - see what our writer has to say about the benefits of single-sex education. Read Full Article

Featured Nonprofit: Samaritans and Samariteens

This Massachusetts nonprofit offers high schoolers a chance to make a huge impact in the lives of their peers. Samaritans is a non-denominational organization that aims to prevent suicide through "befriending individuals in crisis," community outreach, and "compassionate listening" on their helpline. Through Samariteens, students 15 and older can provide "confidential peer support and understanding" to other teens in crisis. Read Full Article

TeenLife Featured Profiles: Independent Schools and Educational Consultants

AMG Educational Consultants saves you time, worry and lets you avoid needless family battles. The challenge of adolescence is eased when a trained outsider supports the family and the student. Easing that stress can make the difference. Counseling in the college and independent school placement field since 1988, Andrea Glovsky has successfully helped hundreds of students by matching interests and abilities to the most appropriate school, whether it's college or a prep school.

Austin Prep offers a rigorous liberal arts curriculum, with
low teacher:student ratios, flexible course placement and a unique Phase System, which looks at students' academic abilities and places them accordingly. We strive always to challenge our students to perform at their highest level while offering strong academic support and instruction both in and out of the classroom. We consider our parents to be full partners in this important enterprise, and we are proud of the family tradition at Austin.

CollegeApplicationEssayCoach.com is a primary service of The Place for Words & Workshops. Owner Mindy Pollack-Fusi works one-on-one with students to coach them on their college application essays in person and online. She helps students refine topics to best depict their unique characteristics and strengths in their own passionate, polished voices. She guides students toward essays that give them an edge in the admissions process and helps them gain acceptance to the colleges of their dreams.

Since 1932, Midland has been setting itself apart from typical educational models. Academics are, of course, the first priority, but Midland students do much more than read books and take tests. For more than 75 years, Midland has involved itself in life prep, not just college prep, and Paul and Louise Squibb would be very pleased that the little school in the woods they founded in the midst of the Depression still teaches self-reliance, simplicity, and service. Calculus, too.

Tucked into the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts, Miss Hall’s School is one of the foremost college-preparatory schools for girls in the country. Established in 1898, the School combines a traditional college-preparatory curriculum with two innovative, nationally acclaimed programs – Horizons, a weekly off-campus, experiential learning opportunity, and the Girls’ Leadership Project, which transforms the School into a leadership laboratory.

Mount Saint Joseph Academy, a Catholic High School for young women, provides a college preparatory education in a community of lived Christian values. Founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, Mount Saint Joseph Academy promotes academic excellence, cultivates respect for all people, fosters unity and reconciliation, and educates young women for compassionate leadership and service.

The Storm King School inspires students toward academic strength and confidence. We offer a caring faculty and community that embrace character, wellness, and trust. Situated in the "green belt" just 45 minutes north of New York City, on the spectacular west bank of the Hudson River, the campus offers a commanding view of the Shawangunk Mountains and distant Catskills. Settled in the peaceful, small town of Cornwall-on-Hudson, the campus adjoins the 3,600-acre Black Rock Forest nature preserve. The proximity of New York City and the many local offerings provide our students with a range of cultural and athletic activities.

Founded in 1886 as St. Mary's School, The White Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school located in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. WMS is dedicated to preparing young people for college and beyond. Its robust curriculum and interactive classes allow students in grades 9 through 12 and post graduate year to own their education and become responsible and innovative young adults. Extensive community service, sustainability studies, performing and fine arts, and outdoor learning programs are integral parts of the school's curriculum.
