Guide helps students seeking community service opportunities by listing 150 non-profits willing to engage teens as volunteers
Cambridge, Mass. – March 15, 2010 – Did you miss the recent TeenLife Boston Community Service fair? You can still access information about teen volunteer opportunities in TeenLife’s online "Guide to Community Service,” a comprehensive directory of Boston area non-profit organizations offering volunteer opportunities to teens who may be looking to fulfill school requirements or find a meaningful after-school or summer experience.
The "Guide to Community Service” categorizes 150 non-profits by organization type, which encourages teens to find a volunteer opportunity in a field that sparks their curiosity, highlights their strengths and explores possible career interests. Categories featured in the guide include: Advocacy with a Cause; Aging with Dignity; Animal Rights & Rescue; Community Resources; Cultural Organizations; Health & Well-Being; Homelessness & Hunger; People with Disabilities; Preserving the Environment; Promoting Volunteerism; and Youth. Individual entries in the guide provide an overview of each non-profit’s objective and list the appropriate volunteer representative’s contact information for each opportunity. Volunteer opportunities are also indexed by town and alphabetically at the end of the guide.
"Almost one in four teens nationwide participates in some type of volunteer activity. Studies show that teens who engage in volunteerism and other meaningful activities outside of school perform better in school and learn critical leadership skills,” said Marie Schwartz, president and founder of TeenLife. "Volunteering allows students to learn experientially, which helps in building self-esteem and allows them to make better choices about courses and career options.”
