Spotlight of the Month
Making Back-to-School Season Easier for Children with Cradles to Crayonss



Teens at Cradles to Crayons 2nd Annual Backpack-a-Thon in August 2008, where 500 volunteers helped to fill 20,000 backpacks with brand new school supplies for Boston area kids ages 4-12 heading back to school

Backpacks, notebooks, folders, pens, and pencils are necessities that low-income and homeless children don’t take for granted. That’s why Cradles to Crayons, based out of North Quincy runs a “Ready for School Campaign” each Fall that helps area children age 0-12 come to school prepared. Read Full Article 


      Volunteer & Internship Opportunities                    



August 15th:
Get the chance to design and improve DoSomething.org by applying for the 2009-2010 Youth Advisory Council. Council Members will fly to New York City this fall and spend 2 days (November 6-7th) with 30 amazing teens at the DoSomething offices. Applications close August 15th.



August 15th:
Help the World Computer Exchange with its mission to bridge the digital divide for the world's poorest youth by volunteering to pack and test computers.





August 15th: Serve as an Outreach Volunteer for The Boston Rescue Mission and support the less fortunate of Boston who are living on the streets.






August 15th: Get involved with People Making a Difference and paint kids' faces for a day of fun, food, and entertainment for the families of West Broadway in South Boston.




September 13th: Volunteer at the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk – a one day event dedicated to conquering all forms of cancer. You can also help keep the event environmentally friendly by being a part of the Jimmy Fund Walk Green Team.




September 14th:The Citi Performing Arts Center is holding auditions the week of September 14th for its Fall Internship Program. This internship offers teens age 14-19 the opportunity improve their acting ability, learn more about their community, and receive a small stipend for their efforts.




Fall: Ever wondered how you could put your Facebook skills to good use? Help teach Web and social media skills at Discovering What's Next. They are also looking for a student with excellent Web skills to help re-design their Web site. They can help you achieve community service credit for both of these projects.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Donation/Goods Drives


Now: Launched by DoSomething.org and Staples, Do Something 101 is a national school supply drive that benefits underserved youth. Now in its second year, the campaign encourages YOU to collect school supplies to support your community now through September 19th


Year-Round: Help On The Rise support and provide much-need resources to homeless women by collecting goods for its "Make-It-Home" Program. The organization is also accepting new and unused travel sized toiletries. They are also currently accepting summer clothes.


Year-Round: Did you know that E-waste represents 2% of America's trash in landfills, but 70% of our overall toxic waste?  World Computer Exchange  accepts working computer and computer accessory donations year-round. Click here for a full list of acceptable donations.
